PACIFIC OCEAN TROPICAL TUNA - PURSE SEINE (US PACIFIC TUNA GROUP)
The US Pacific Tuna Group FIP covers the Eastern Tropical Pacific and Western Tropical Pacific tuna stocks for the three major species: skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) for a total of 6 Units of Certification. Gear type is Purse Seine and fishing method includes both FAD associated and unassociated sets.
In April 2022 the FIP conducted a scope extension, this included two new vessels and fishery management systems including Ecuador and Nicaragua. This brings the total FIP vessels to 12 large-scale tuna purse seiners.
In June 2022, the FIP achieved MSC Certification for the majority of the UoAs. The only stocks not certified were Eastern Pacific Ocean bigeye and skipjack. The FIP now covers these remaining uncertified stocks, the conditions received during the MSC certification and the scope extension completed in April 2022.
In late 2023, the fishery conducted a scope extension to include EPO skipjack under the certificate, which it passed with one condition which has been incoperated into the FIP workplan. Along with this, a founding vessel of the FIP, Daniela, also achevied MSC certification via a gap analysis. As of Jan 2024, the units of assessment including Nacaragua and Ecuador are in MSC assessment via the CAB SCS Global.
